Review of academic work on migrant social care workers
Skills for Care & Development (SfC&D) is the Sector Skills Council responsible for coordinating skills development in the social care, children’s and young people’s workforce and requires detailed information about the composition of this workforce in order to plan effectively. Some posts in the sector have a relatively high reliance on workers originating outside the UK. While SfC&D undertakes some research on the size and characteristics of the migrant workers in the sector, it wanted to map research undertaken by other organisations in order to avoid duplication of effort.
We were commissioned to undertake the mapping of academic research. In order to do this, we:
- interviewed SfC&D’s partners in order to identify what kinds of research was required;
- undertook an internet search of all UK higher education institutions to identify current and recent workstreams in this area;
- reviewed the work undertaken to identify both useful lines of enquiry and gaps in provision;
- identified potential partners for future collaboration.
